5 Good Things About "Bad Genius" : A Review

If any of you reading this has never heard about the heist-thriller Thailand movie, I recommend you to check it out right now. And no, this movie is not about heist-crimes.

It's about cheating on exams.

Intrigued yet?

In short, it's a movie about a straight-A student, helping her classmates to cheat on exams for a certain amount of money as it grows into a bigger scale. Directed by Nattawut Poonpiriya, distributed by GDH 559 and was released on 3rd May 2017 in Thailand; this movie has won many awards including Best Asian Feature Film at Fantasia Film Award, and one of the four Finalists for the Best Foreign Language Film for the 90th Academy Awards.

I have been waiting to watch this since the trailer and the poster was retweeted by a friend of mine. It is released in Malaysia theaters on 10th August 2017.

*May contain spoilers*

1. Boring plot turns epic
It's a movie about students taking exams. Which, in words from the director himself-- "the most boring activity in the world"-- and I couldn't agree more. But add in the thrill of a brilliant student, helping her classmates and eventually many students across the country to succeed in their exams, with possible cheating methods, and you get a movie that will get you hook on your seat. And note, that this movie is inspired by true events.

2. Beautiful music score
The soundtrack of the movie is almost flawless. From Beethoven's Fur Elise notes played by the main character to the modern, high-on-chase track, the sound design is nicely done to accompany the equally brilliant editing.

3. Artistic cinematography
The motion and transitions of the movie is so smooth and I applaud them for their brilliant film editing. The scene when the main character is being chase in the underground train station can rival any Hollywood epic-chasing scene; minus the absurdity of gun-shooting and exploding trains. It's suspense, artistic, and epic.

4. Serious humor
Casual and serious humor is the two top-tier humor-style that has receive many critical claims but is famously use to make the flow of the movies seem natural and not overdo. This movie plays the casual / serious humor like a snap of a finger, adding on the fun, relax moments in between the heart-dropping scenes.

5. Interesting characters
You will find the main character as someone who you would (or might) respect. Her brilliant mind and quick-wittiness in developing the game plan for cheating on exams (while not cheating herself, since she answers the exam by her own ability) is believable and possible. Adding on the other characters (a genius-nerd, a spoiled rich-boy, and a drama queen) that build the relationship bridge, you will find yourself caring and interested to know the character's actions and future.

So, what do you think? If you have watch it, do you agree on the list or do you disagree? I am always open to hear your thoughts on the movie.

See you soon, lovelies!
